TABULATED LIST OF CELLS EXPLANATION OF HEADINGS, REFERENCES Description. i.e. dedication or situation of cell. H. = hermit, hermitage. A. = anchorite (male or female), anchorage. Date. i.e. the earliest accredited reference ; c. = circa c. = century ; bef. = before ; tp. = temp. Patron. = patron, benefactor, source of endowment. Italics. The use of italics implies uncertainty. When a name is italicized it signifies tha the person is described not as hermit by keeper, chaplain, etc. Name. With name of inmate, D. = Dame ; Br. = Brother ; pr. = priest ; d. = died ; n.d. = no date recorded. N. B. —The
numbering of cells is for puposes of reference. In some cases two
or more numbers may refer to one cell, e.g. in Norfolk, Nos. 19, 27,
29, 30.
