Using
the ground plan for the Beaulieu Abbey, explore the church
and cloister of a medieval Monastery and accompanying abbey
church. Beaulieu was a Cistercian foundation, which means that
the monks of the monastery followed the Benedictine Rule but in the way
of the monastic group called the Cistercians. (See Cistercians.) As
such, Beaulieu would have housed two types of monks, Lay Monks and
Professed Monks. This was usual for Cistercian monasteries of the
later middle ages. Photographs and images for these pages come
